Located on the bank of the Man River, 83 kilometres from Amphoe Mueang,
Phra That Si Song Rak is located on the bank of Man River, 83 km from the town centre.
It was built in 1560 and finished in 1563 during Ayutthaya period on the border of
Ayutthaya Kingdom and Lan Xang Kingdom, with Lan Xang architecture. The pagoda
is 19.19 metres high and its square base with 10.89 metres wide on each side.
The pagoda symbolises the resolve of the kings of these two kingdoms not to
invade each other’s territory and to join forces against Burmese invaders.
There is a wax figure of the late Luang Pho Phra Maha Phan Sila Wisuttho,
the founder of the temple.
In April to May annually, a ceremony is held to worship the pagoda.
Dan Sai’s indigenous tradition, Phi Ta Khon is also held there in June or July
every year.
Note: It is important not to offer any red colour items or dressed in red as
it is believed that this pagoda was built on the purpose of honesty and
friendship between the two kingdoms. Red is the symbol of blood and violence.
Visitors should not use umbrella, wear hat and shoes while visiting Phra That
Si Song Rak.

How to get there: Take Highway 203 (Loei – Phu Rua) from Loei town centre,
turn to Highway No.2013 for 15 km to Amphoe Dan Sai, then turn right to
Highway No.2113 for 1 km. There are also mini buses (songtaews) and tuk-tuks
running from Loei town centre.
Location: Amphoe Tha Li
This pagoda, which is similar in design to Phra That Phanom, is 33 metres
high and topped with the white 7 tiered umbrella of sovereignty. In addition,
there are lotuses in full bloom with 3 layered petals, one metre high encircling
the base of the pagoda. The pagoda is located in the area of Wat Lat Pu,
Ban Tha Li, which is 2 kilometres from Amphoe Tha Li Administrative Office.
Take Highway 201, turn left at the junction to the Highway 2115 Tha Li -
Ahi route.
Location: Amphoe Chiang Khan
This unique temple on Chai Khong Road north of Chiang Khan market has a
chapel similar to that found in northern Thai temples with a mural of a
Buddhist tale covering the entire front part.
Location: Amphoe Na Haeo
Wat Pho Chai is an old temple, which was established even before the village
was founded. Most historians believe it could be dated to the 22nd – 23rd
Buddhist centuries. Within the compound of the temple is a Buddhist scripture
library built on tall poles and an elaborate main hall or chapel over 400
years old that is a fine example of Loei’s local buildings. The murals on
both the inner and outer walls depicting Lord Buddha’s life and featuring
the beliefs of the people of Ban Na Phung in the late Ayutthaya period and
the Ratanakosin period respectively. Enshrined within the temple is the
bronze Ong Saen Buddha or Fon Saen Ha image. It is believed that wherever
this image is placed, that area will not be dry. To get there, take the
Loei-Dan Sai Road for 82 kilometres, turn right and proceed on the Dan Sai
– Na Haeo Road for another 23 kilometres.
Location: Amphoe Mueang
The village produces authentic and unique Loei fabrics. Visitors can see
weaving demonstrations and purchase some products such as cloths, shirts,
dresses, and handbags as souvenirs. To get there, take Loei-Chiang Khan
Road for 4 kilometres, turn right and proceed for 1 kilometre.
Location: Amphoe Tha Li
The group produces rattan furniture and items of high quality, as well as
beautifully woven clothes. Visitors are welcome to see the production process
and purchase souvenirs. To get there, take the Loei-Tha Li road for 47 kilometres.
Upon reaching the District, turn right to Ban Ahi and proceed for 9 kilometres.
Then turn right again and proceed for another 5 kilometres towards Ban Na
Kraseng.
Location: Amphoe Chiang Khan
This is an islet in the middle of the Mekong River, 3 kilometres from Chiang
Khan District Office. Kaeng Khut Khu is well known for its colorful boulders
that are clearly visible during the dry season and totally submerged in
other seasons. On the opposite bank of the River, visitors can see “Chana
Kham”, Vientiane District, Laos PDR.
For tourists, there are traditional
northeastern restaurants on the riverbank selling grilled fish and freshwater
shrimp. A boat can be chartered to enjoy magnificent views along Maekong
River. To get there from the city of Loei, take the Loei-Chiang Khan road
and drive for 47 kilometres, turn right and proceed for another 3 kilometres
to Amphoe Chiang Khan.
Location: Amphoe Phu Kradung

Covering an area of 348.12 sq km with 60 sq km of the plateau on the top of the
mountain, Phu Kradueng has long been the spot where tourists can experience the
chill of the weather up to freezing point during winter season and a spectacular view.
Its elevation is between 400-1,200 m above sea level. The summit is called Khok Moei
at 1,316 m. The sandstone mountain of Phu Kradueng is a home to an abundance of flora
and fauna, stunning cliffs, savanna, streams and waterfalls.
The plateau on the top
of the mountain consists of pine trees and grassland. Forest and vegetation provide
food for wildlife including elephants, sambar deer, barking deer, bears, serong,
White-rumped Shama, Black Eagle, Silver Pheasant and many more. There is also a
rare species of turtle called Tao Poo Loo or Tao Hang living along the stream in
the high elevation. There are accommodations provided by the Department of National
Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Camping ground is also available. The park
is closed during rainy season between June and September every year.

How to get there: Take Highway No.201 from Loei town centre, pass Amphoe Wang Saphung and Amphoe Nong Hin. Turn right onto Highway no.2019, pass Amphoe Phu Kradueng centre and continue for 4 km to the National Park Office. The total distance from the town centre is 81 km.
Location: Amphoe Phu Luang
This jungle plateau with a cool climate the whole year has certain areas
that are open to the public. A trail leads from Lon Mon past a pine forest,
a grass field, a flower field on a rock plateau, and various cliffs, for
a total distance of about 6 kilometres. From Pha Lon Tae, visitors can see
Phu Ho and Phu Kradueng. It is required that visitors to Phu Luang must
be accompanied by Park Officers. Advance reservations must be made at Phu
Luang Tourist Office, Wang Saphung District Office, in order to arrange
accommodations, food and a 3 days/ 2 nights tour. The best time for trekking

Transportation to the Phu Luang National Park

The Loei-Chum Phae 201 National Highway leads to Amphoe Wang Saphung before
Amphoe Muang which is 20 kilometres away from each other. From Amphoe Wang
Saphung, on the left of the Wang Saphung Community School, there is a road
to the office of the Phu Luang National Park. The road is the 26 kilometres
long OARD No. 1027 on which a bus shuttles two round trips daily. From there
a 9 kilometres long motor car road leads to Huai Kung. Then three hours
walk to the Loan Tae tourist resting spot. It is 7 kilometres away. From
the office to the tourist resting spot, it is 6 hours walk and 14 kilometres
in distance.
Location: Amphoe Phu Rua
Covering an area of 121 sq km, Phu Rua National Park is located on a flat top
mountain that has a shape similar to a boat with the peak at 1,365 metres above
sea level. The top offers a spectacular view of Laos’ countryside as well as
Heang River and Mekong River. Pha Lon Nai offers a panoramic view and a stunning
sunrise. Pha Sup Thong or Pha Ku Lap Khaw (White Rose Cliff) is a very steep cliff,
abundant with white roses. It also has wonderful 30-metre-high Huai Phai Waterfall.
The Park is comprised of pine forest, savanna fields with diverse types of flowers
in particular Rhododendrons. More than half of the area on the top of Phu Rua is
covered with low shrubbery, grasslands and some odd shape rock formations. It is
also a home to 105 bird species, Barking Deer, squirrels, wild boars, monkeys and
Siamese Hares.

How to get there: Take Highway No.203 to Phu Rua sub-district then turn right
and continue for 4 km to National Park Office.
Location: Amphoe Dan Sai
The park is located at Ban Saeng Pha. With excellent natural reserves, mountains,
streams and waterfalls, the park is an ideal place for light adventure activities
and trekking. Facilities provided by the Ha Haeo National Park include accommodations,
food, guides and provision bearers.
To get there: from the city,
take Highway No, 203 passing Amphoe Dan Sai, turn right onto Highway No.
2113 at kilometres 82 marker and proceed for another 50 kilometres to the
park’s office.
Location: Amphoe Dan Sai
Situated at Tambon Nam Suai, 24 kilometres from the city is a park that
covers over 1,000 rai of land comprised mainly of limestone mountains surrounding
a dense jungle. The main attractions in the Park are scenic viewpoints and
caves while the main activity for visitors is trekking and camping.
Location: Amphoe Mueang
With a capacity of 26 million cubic metres, the earth-filled reservoir covers
an area of 1,500 rai of land. Offering breathtaking views which are accented
by a bamboo forest and evergreen mountains, the reservoir offers dining
opportunities in bamboo rafts and other recreational activities. To get
there, drive along the Loei-Phu Ruea Road for 15 kilometres, then turn right
at the reservoir sign and proceed for another 5 kilometres.
Location: Amphoe Phu Ruea
This waterfall drops from a large rock platform to the pool below. To get
to the waterfall, take the Phu Ruea-Dan Sai Road for 7 kilometres to Ban
Kok Pho and take a left-hand road and proceed for 10 kilometres. The Phu
Ruea Highland Agriculture Testing Station is 14 kilometres past the waterfall.
The center grows cold-climate plants and an assortment of flowers.
Location: Amphoe Na Haeo
This large waterfall originating from Maenam Huang and is surrounded by
a verdant jungle is located approximately 25 kilometres from the District
Office. To reach the waterfall, travel 7 kilometres on the Na Haeo-Rom Klao
Road and an additional 10 kilometres on the way to Bo Mueang Noi.
Location: Amphoe Nong Hin
This Park has limestone mountains that have eroded over time to form an
interesting shape, similar to that in Kunming in China. A path, which winds
through the rocks, takes visitors to the lovely Suan Hom and Phiang Din
Waterfalls. The park is south of town on Highway No. 201. Proceed past Wang
Saphung to Nong Hin then take another road for 20 kilometres.
Location: Amphoe Mueang
Located in Loei Rajabhat Institute, 5 kilometres from the city, on the Loei-Chiang
Khan Road, the center features exhibits on indigenous culture and traditions

The farm produces Shiitake mushrooms all year round for sale locally and

Location: Amphoe Mueang
Situated at Ban Ko Rai Yai, approximately 9 kilometres from the city, the
farm offers a unique opportunity to see thousands of turkeys. To get there
from the city, take Highway No. 203 (Loei-Dan Sai) to the kilometres 9 marker,
turn left and proceed for approximately 50 metres. The farm opens daily

Location: Amphoe Chiang Khan
This village, situated at Ban Na Pa Nat, Tambon Khao Kawo, has so much to
offer to art lovers. The Thai Dam (Dam = black) people migrated here from
Laos in 1905. Conservative and traditional, their culture has been well
preserved as illustrated in the construction of their houses and their lifestyle.
In addition, a local weaving group demonstrating the traditional weaving
process. Visitors can purchase souvenirs at the group’s center and cultural
enthusiasts can experience the Thai Dam lifestyle through homestay accommodations.
