Chaopho Kut Pong Shrine and the City Pillar Shrine

Chaopho Kut Pong Shrine
Chaopho Kut Pong Shrine is located near City Pillar Shrine which these shrines are the sacred shrines of people in Mueang District since it is believed that angels are living here. Therefore Loei people bring many animal statues such as elephants and horses to given to the shrine for luck. There are also other sacred statues such as Phra Sankachan who brings luck and happiness, Buddha statues. Singha statues are located at the door of the shrine due to Chinese belief.

How to get there:
By car: From the clock tower roundabout, use Sertsri Road for about 150 kilometers. Chaopho Kut Pong Shrine is next to the City Pillar Shrine. The public park is behind Chaopho Kut Pong Shrine.
By bus: From the bus terminal, get on a yellow city bus to the public park and walk across the bridge to Chaopho Kut Pong Shrine.

Loei Museum is located at the old building which this building used to be Mueang Loei District Office (on the upper floor of the TAT Loei Office). The museum was displayed history of Loei from the past to the present as well as local arts, culture, and traditions.

The area in the building is divided into sections to exhibit history, traditions, beliefs, ceremonies, tourist attractions of Loei Province, and the visit of King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The second floor of the museum has 3 exhibition rooms. The first room is Loei History Room, exhibiting the uniqueness of culture, natural heritages, and ethnics in Loei. The second room is Cultural Room, exhibiting significant cultures of the province. The third room is King’s Trace Room (Roi Sadet), exhibiting the chairs that King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit used when they visited here 3 times (a visit to plant conifers on Phu Kradueng in 1955, a visit to meet their subjects in Dan Sai District in 1973, and a visit to boost the spirits of the National Defence Volunteers to protect the motherland at the forecourt of Loei Provincial Hall in 1981). The first floor is the bureau of Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Phi Ta Khon Museum

Phi Ta Khon Museum
Phi Ta Khon is the signature of Dan Sai District and is famous throughout the world so Phi Ta Khon Museum was built to preserve, exhibits the history of inherited culture and traditions of Phi Ta Khon. Apart from the exhibition of culture and traditions, the museum also exhibits various kinds of Phi Ta Khon which include 2 types are Phi Ta Khon Yai and Phi Ta Khon Lek. Phi Ta Khon Yai there is female and male are both not made every year except in the determined ceremonies. Phi Ta Khon Lek that can see every year.

Phi Ta Khon will be in the parade of Boon Phi Ta Khon Festival which will entertain people in this festival. Boon Phi Ta Khon Festival is a part of Boon Luang Festival, a big merit festival of the year in this area that combines Boon Prevet Festival (Heet Duen See) and Boon Bung Fai Festival (Heet Duen Hok) together. The purpose of Boon Pravet Festival is to tell the Sermon of the last great incarnation story of the Buddha. The purpose of Boon Bung Fai Festival is to cerebrate for the city angels and to make the rain falls in the right season.

Phi Ta Khon mask making which has these following parts.
-The head is made from a half-folded earthenware steamer which looks like a hat
-The face is made from a base of a coconut branch. It is sewed with the head part and then pierced for the eyes.
-The nose is made from a carved soft wood which looks like a human’s nose. Now the trunk-shaped nose is more popular.
-The decoration is done by natural colors in the past such as calcium hydroxide, red lime, ashes, curcuma, and soot. However, oil color has been used instead since it gives more colorful color. Then small pieces of cloth are sewed together with the streamer and the face and will cover the shoulders.
The process of Phi Ta Khon masks is finished. The museum also provides souvenir shop for visitors.

How to get there: From Dan Sai District Office, use the Public Highway No. 2114, passing Dan Sai Police Station and Dan Sai Market. After passing the bridge, Wat Phon Chai is on the left hand side. Phi Ta Khon is in this temple.

Public Parks
Kut Pong Public Park

Kut Pong Public Park is the large park for relaxing and meeting of local people. The Public Park is the lung of Loei Town, the park has lots of small and large shady trees with a refreshing atmosphere. It’s located beside Kut Pong Lake, opposite the Chao Pho Kut Pong Shrine with a bridge over the lake connecting between two places. The park also features a playground where parents can let their children play safely. In addition, there is another interesting activity everyone can enjoy such as feeding fish at the bridge.

How to get there: From the clock tower, drive about 150 meters along Soet Si Road before arriving at the Chao Pho Kut Pong Shrine and the City Pillar Shrine. Then walk to the back of the shrines and you will reach the destination.

Huai Nam Man or Huai Krathing Reservoir is the beautiful place to seeing the sunset and relaxing which this Reservoir has a few travelers to known. Huai Nam Man or Huai Krathing Reservoir is located in Harirak Forest Park with a capacity of 26 million cubic meters and the earth-filled reservoir covers an area of 1,500 rai of land. Moreover there are bamboo rafting to seeing sunrise and sightseeing around reservoir, especially during winter season around this place are alive with the beautiful fog.

Phu Pha Lom Forest Park

Phu Pha Lom Forest Park or local people call “Kuan Pha Lom” which it is the name of limestone hill surrounding with a dense jungle and it is located at 400 - 700 meters above sea level cover an area about 13.6 square kilometers. Trekking along the trails leads you to several viewpoints where you soak up the scenic panorama. Many locals believe that caves and wells found in the forest park, such as Phu Pha Lom, Laeo and Pha Bong caves and Nam Phut and Nam Sap wells are sacred places. They believe the wells are the den of Naga, a mythical serpent, with an underground water passage connecting to the Mae Khong River.

How to get there: From the city of Loei take Highway No. 2138 to reach 9 km post, turn left to Highway No. 2249 about 18 kilometers to Ban Pear and then turn right to Wat Leab. Take Ban Peab-Huai Tad Road about 2 kilometers you will see Samnak Song Kuan Pha Lom at the left side and then drive about 2 kilometers to Phu Pha Lom Forest Park.

Kaeng Khut Khu is one of the most famous and beautiful place in Chiang Khan District. Don’t miss to visit Kaeng Khut Khu if you travel to Chiang Khan. Kaeng Khut Khu is an islet in the middle of the Mekong River and there are many boulders around here. It is well known for its colorful boulders that are clearly visible during the dry season or during February - May and totally submerged in other seasons. On the opposite bank of the River, visitors can see “Chana Kham”, Vientiane District, Laos PDR. For tourists, there are traditional northeastern restaurants on the riverbank selling grilled fish and freshwater shrimp. A boat can be chartered to enjoy magnificent views along Maekong River.

How to get there: From the city of Loei, take the Loei-Chiang Khan road and drive for 47 kilometers, turn right and proceed for another 3 kilometers to Chiang Khan District.

Phu Tok is a great viewpoint to see beautiful sunrise and the sea of fog, it’s located about 3 kilometers south-east of Chiang Khan District. Phu Tok is a mountain with 470 meters above sea-level high and high from the foot of the mountain about 250 meters. The best time to see sunrise is before 06.00 am.
Phuluang Wildlife Sanctuary

Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary is at jungle plateau in Phu Luang in the Loei Province. The reserve is part of the Elephants Rehabilitation Project, under the patronage of Queen Sirikit, and is home to an estimated 100 wild Asian elephants, exotic birds, monkeys and Dinosaur footprints, aged more than 120 million years were discovered on a rock on the east side of the sanctuary as well. Given its altitude the sanctuary is cool all year round. There is a trail that leads from Lon Mon past a pine forest, a grass field, a flower field on a rock plateau, and various cliffs, for a total distance of about 6 kilometers. Visitors to the park must be guided by sanctuary officials and this must be arranged in advance. Accommodation is available, but again this must be arranged in advance.

How to get there: Take Highway No.203, the Loei - Phu Ruea route, for approximately 36 kilometers to Ban San Tom, turn left at the side of the Ban San Tom School and go along the asphalt route for 18 kilometers until reaching the Huai Thong Checkpoint. Proceed further along the laterite path for approximately 10 kilometers to the Khok Nok Kraba Ranger Station. A four-wheeled drive car should be used. In case that the car cannot be driven uphill, there is a pickup for rent provided at the Huai Thong Checkpoint.

Suan Hin Pha Ngam Park or Kunming of Loei is limestone mountains that occurring from the aggradation of beach deposits. Then, an uplift of the earth’s crust, together with millions of years of natural rot have made this mountain be strangely beautiful, similar to the stone garden in Kunming of China. Therefore, it was named “Thailand’s Kunming”. Within the compound is also situated a tourist information centre. To admire the nature, interested persons can contact an officer to conduct a tour around the stone garden as a group of 10 persons, costing 100 Baht per group. This is because of the narrowness and labyrinthine path which visitors might be able to get lost. Interesting travelling routes in the stone garden are Tham Thalu, mountains in strange animal shapes, a viewpoint at the summit of Khao Pha Bong or the stone mountain with a hole in the middle of its top. Each point is called differently.

How to get there: From Loei City, take Highway No. 201, the Loei - Chum Phae route for approximately 43 kilometers and turn right for 19 kilometers.
Anodad Pool

Anodad is a large natural pond located about 3.4 kilometers from Wang Kwang Office. The pond has water all year round and with crystal clear water showing reflections of the scenery of the nearby foliage. Two - needled and three - needled pines grow profusely along the edge of the pond.

Phu Lom Lo is a great place to see a beautiful scenery view of the wild Himalayan cherry which the best time to see during January - February. More than 100,000 wild Himalayan cherries trees, planted six years ago, begin to blossom located in the Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, where an area covers of two provinces are Loei and Phitsanulok. The wild Himalayan cherry grows in northern Thailand. Its pink flowers make some Thais call it "sakura", or Japanese cherry blossoms, though it is a different species. There are no facilities near Phu Lom Lo and recommended to use a four-wheel-drive vehicle to getting there or contact Ban Rong Kla, they offers transport and guide service.
