top of the finial is 59 meters and 20 centimeters. East side of the
monastery, adjacent to the ancient city moat, is the construction site
of the pavilion housing Chao Pho Maha Sakdanuphab spirit which is highly
revered by Roi-Et people.
Wat
Klang Ming Muang
This monastery, located on a knoll in Roi Et township area, is a
very old monastery and is presumed that it should have been built before
the foundation of Roi Et while its main shrine hall was built in late
Ayutthaya period. It was used as the place for oath taking ceremony in
the past. At present, this monastery is utilized as a Buddhism teaching
school and as a place where annual examination on Dharma teaching takes
place. There are beautiful and valuable mural paintings concerning the
Lord Buddha's biography on the inside walls of main shrine hall.
 Wat
Sa Thong
This monastery is also located in the township area. It houses Luang
Pho Sangkatjai (the Happy Buddha) which is highly respected by Roi Et
people. However, it is unknown as to when it was built but in the year
1782 Phraya Khattiya Wongsa (Thao Thon). the first ruler of Roi Et,
found this statue and recognized its oldness and severity. He, then,
invited the image to be enshrined in Wat Sa Thong and upgraded it into
the town treasure. In the past, every official must come to attend an
annual oath taking ceremony before the Buddha image making intention
that he will be honest to the country.

Ku
Kasing
Ku Kasing is
another Khmer architecture having rather large size and being in good
enough condition. At present, the Eighth Fine Arts Unit is working on
excavation and renovation so that one can have better and more beautiful
vision of it. This is to develop the site into another important tourist
attraction in the northeast. The remains consist of three prangs located
on the same sand stone basement. There are also viharas or rectangular
buildings called "Bannalai"
situated two sides in front. All the buildings are surrounded by the
walls having a niche-top entrance in each of the four directions.
Outside, the wall is surrounded by a horse shoe featured moat. The main
prang or the principal building of three prangs is situated on the same
base lying in north-south direction. Its layout is of a square feature
facing the east. The middle prang is bigger than the two on both sides
and there is a balcony featuring a long chamber in front. There are
three doors to enter the balcony : one front door and two side doors of
the long chamber. The base of the prang was built of sand stone having
designs of carved tiered and lineate features such as lotus and kanok.
Partitions were made in terms of brick laying and plastering. In the
innermost chamber a phallic symbol, the representative of the highest
rank divine (Shiva), was found. The symbol also represents richness and
perfection according to the belief of Brahminism of Saiwa Sect.
Moreover, several lintels are found and one of those is carved in the
feature of Shiva mounted on the Erawan ( the 3 headed elephant ) in the
crystal pavilion standing on the Nakan (a mythical animal in Hinduism
which can be seen only its face which looks like a lion) having one hand
holding a garland. At the niche gable, there is also a finding of a
carved feature of God Indra mounted on the Erawan among the Kankhot
design while the two sided prangs have the same size and
characteristics. The base is made of sand stone while partitions are of
brick laying having only the front door and the sacred images are placed
on a platform inside. The found artistic designs, layout patterns and
archaeological objects give the idea that Ku Kasing was built in a Khmer
style of art called "Bapuan Style" dating between 1017-1087 A.D. The
construction purpose is to worship Shiva, the highest rank divine in
Brahmanism. |

Ku
Phra Kona
It is located
at Ban Ku, Mu 2, Tambon Sa Khu , Amphoe Suwannaphum. To reach there one
can leave Roi-Et township through Highway No. 215 passing Amphoe Muang
Sunng, then, join Highway No. 202 passing Amphoe Suwannaphum and join
Highway No. 214 for an approximate distance of 12 kilometers to arrive
at Ku Phra Kona totaling a distance of about 60 kilometers from the
province township. At present, there is a monastery built within the
same area having a road branching off to the left and the front area is
a rubber plantation. Ku Phra Kona consists of three brick prangs built
on the sand stone base lying in the north-south direction. All face the
east being surrounded by the wall having a niche-top entrance in each of
the four directions and they were also made of sand stone. The middle
prang was transformed in the year 1928 by plastering on and building up
in tiers each of which has a niche for housing a Buddha image in every
direction of the fours. Ground floor of the front side of the middle
prang was constructed as a sanctuary housing the Buddha's foot prints
and decorated with the original six-headed nagas in front. The two sided
prangs were also renovated by the monastery but the features are not
changed like the middle one. The prang in the north is covered with a
pavilion having carved features of Ramayana no the inside gable and the
carved "Narai Banthom Sin"
lintel is placed at the original location, i. e., above the front door
outside. The lintel of the west door featuring Narai God mounted on the
Garuda has now fallen down on the floor. The south prang still has the
original lintel placed above the front door in the north. The feature is
a divine in sitting position with one knee folding upward in the crystal
niche above the Nakan. In addition, there are lintels falling down on
the floor at the front side, i.e., the feature of God Shiva mounted on
an ox back with Nang Rieng pillars placing nearby. It is presumed that
Ku Phra Kona should firstly have a naga bridge with walking path and
decorated on both sides with Nang Rieng pillars stretching from the
front niche-top door to the pond of barai which is about 300 meters
distance. From all artistic patterns of the caving features and the door
frame pillars made in Khmer style having the age between 1017-1087 A.D.
(Bapuan Design), it can be presumed that Ku Phra Kona should have been
built around the 11th century A.D. |

stone cliff having running water and small springs coming out from the
cliff all year round. Its location is on Phu Khao Khieo, Ban Khok Klang,
Tambon Khok Sawang having an approximate forest area of 20,000 rai
surrounding the cliff. There are various kinds of hard wood in the
forest which is regarded a valuable and exquisite one. It is also the
habitat of several kinds of animals such as wild boar, barking deer,
deer, wild cock and hen. There is a monastery built on this hill
occupying an area of 2,500 rai. There is a very large multi purpose
pavilion (Sala kan prian) on the hill shelf having the width of 40
meters and the length of 80 meters. The name of this monastery is
"Wat Pha Nam Thip Thep Prasit Wanaram".

Thung
Kularonghai Development Center
This is a large plot of land in the northeast occupying an
approximate area of 2,000,000 rai. The area covers the vicinities of
five provinces : Surin, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, Buriram, and Yasothon.
The reason why this large field is called Kula Ronghai is that the Kula
tribal people who traveled for trading in this area in the ancient times
though they were healthy, tough, and very patient, however, could not
stand for serious hardship when they traveled across this field thus
causing them to cry since they could not find any water source nor shady
area in the field at all. During summer time the ground is hard and
having broken surface as pits all over. At present, the field is being
developed by various governmental and nongovernmental offices thus
causing some plots of the field become crop lands and some plots are
used for animal raising. It is recognized that from now on the field
will gradually become more fertile and richer. Thung Kula Ronghai
Development Center is located six kilometers from the office of Amphoe
Suwannaphum .just a short distance beyond Ku Phra Kona. |
